With our network of suppliers and commitment to excellence, we proudly help couples bring their dream wedding to life, honouring their unique customs and traditions every step of the way.
Sri Lankan weddings are a vibrant celebration of culture, tradition, and love, encompassing a rich tapestry of rituals and customs that date back centuries.
At The Epping Club, we understand the importance of honouring these cherished traditions, which is why we are proud to offer our support in undertaking unique customs that make each wedding a truly memorable and meaningful occasion.
Pre-Wedding Rituals: Nekath and Poruwa Ceremony
Before setting a wedding date, Sri Lankan couples may consult an astrologer to determine an auspicious time for their union, known as the "Nekath." This sets the stage for the Poruwa ceremony, the highlight of a Sri Lankan wedding, conducted on a beautifully decorated wooden platform. Here, the bride and groom, accompanied by their families and friends, participate in a series of rituals symbolising their commitment and unity.
Exchange of Rings, Traditional Attire, and Oil Lamp Lighting
During the Poruwa ceremony, the couple exchanges rings and participates in the Nalangu ritual, symbolising their unity. The bride adorns herself in a stunning saree or traditional Kandyan bridal costume, while the groom wears the National Dress. Together, they light traditional oil lamps to invoke blessings and good fortune for their married life.
Milk Mixing, Offering of Betel Leaves, and Traditional Blessings
The couple participates in the Milk Mixing ritual, pouring milk into a decorated vessel to symbolise the blending of their lives. They also offer betel leaves to their parents as a sign of respect and gratitude for their love and support. Throughout the ceremony, they receive blessings from elders and religious figures, praying for prosperity, fertility, and longevity in their married life.
Traditional Music, Dance, Wedding Reception, and Sweetmeats
Sri Lankan weddings may be accompanied by traditional music and dance performances, including the Jayamangala Gatha song and traditional dances like Kandyan and Low country dances. Following the ceremony, a grand reception is held featuring music, dancing, and a lavish feast. Guests are treated to mouth-watering traditional sweetmeats such as Kavum, Kokis, and Athirasa, symbolising joy and celebration.
